From the Front Lines: BCP's unwavering commitment to health equity.

Dear Friends,

In this edition of From the Front Lines, I share my perspective on Boston Community Pediatrics response to the current state of our country — and how we will continue to take care of each and every patient regardless of federal funding and regardless of the political chaos. We will continue to do the work that we do best which is partnering with families to provide the highest quality comprehensive care for pediatric patients. We will continue to put one foot in front of the other and support all families during this time. In order to do so, we will continue to partner with our donors, elected officials, community partners, and volunteers because we know that we are stronger together. THIS is equity in pediatric healthcare and THIS is BCP.

As freezes on federal funding threaten to halt critical grants and significantly reduce Medicaid funding (which is BCP’s largest insurance payor), the impact on healthcare access – particularly for minority families with low-income – is dire. BCP has always, and always will, place the needs and well-being of our patients above all else.

BCP is uniquely equipped to navigate this crisis and ensure that no patient is left without care, regardless of government funding decisions.

Since its opening in 2020, BCP’s patient base has grown from 150 to over 1,700 patients, now supporting more than 4,000 individuals. The care and resources we provide—such as integrated behavioral health services, dental care, care navigation and wellness services, vaccinations for parents, transportation assistance, holiday food and gift drives, after-school programs, including a cooking class, food, diapers, hygiene products, clothing, and more—will not change regardless of the decisions of the federal government.

BCP serves some of the city’s most vulnerable families. With 25% of its annual budget tied to Medicaid and federal grants, there is real money at risk, but we will remain unwavering in our commitment to our patients and the highest quality care: BCP will continue seeing patients—whether or not there is government reimbursement for it.

It is because of the incredible philanthropic support of our community that we are able to continue to provide this care. Here is what BCP is committed to:

  • The Future of Pediatric Care in a Politicized Landscape: As government funding becomes increasingly unpredictable, philanthropic support is more critical than ever. BCP’s unique funding model makes BCP well-positioned to weather this storm and we are particularly grateful for our loyal and generous supporters who are continuing to make this possible.

  • Unwavering Commitment to Care: Despite potential Medicaid shutdowns and loss of grant funding, BCP will not reduce services, turn away patients, or lay off staff. We are prepared to tap into financial reserves and actively fundraise to bridge any gaps.

  • Understanding and Responding to the Reality for Minority Families with Low-Income: Many of BCP’s patients are people of color with low-income, and the fear of losing access to care is palpable. BCP will continue to provide a safe, trusted space amid uncertainty. BCP will continue to support families with their health-related social needs during this time.

  • Legal & Security Measures: With increased patient safety concerns, BCP has implemented security protocols and legal safeguards to protect the families we serve, including adding pro-bono legal services consultation for providers to the many types of support available at 527 Albany Street.

  • Applying Important Lessons Learned from COVID-19: Having opened in the middle of the pandemic, BCP has already demonstrated its ability to adapt and respond in times of crisis—whether by pivoting to food and essential supply distribution for families in need or ensuring continued access to vaccines and medical care.

At a time when thousands of families are uncertain about their healthcare access and when many of the social determinants of health are at particular risk, BCP’s story is one of resilience, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to health equity. As a social justice nonprofit practice that has healthcare at its core, we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our patients’ access to the high-quality care they deserve is not compromised.

That is what we know during this very uncertain time. Thank you for being a part of the movement to change the way healthcare is delivered to all children. And now, back to the front lines.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robyn Riseberg

Founder, Boston Community Pediatrics
